Brick paver patio maintenance in Birmingham, MI comes down to what you do in September and October, not what you do in April. Michigan runs through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter, and every one of them works on the weakest point in your hardscape.

Seven tasks make the difference. None of them take a full weekend.

1. Clear the surface before the leaves pile up

Wet leaves left on pavers for a month leave tannin stains that no pressure washer removes. They also trap moisture against the surface all winter.

Sweep the patio, then rinse it with a garden hose and a stiff brush. Skip the pressure washer unless you know the joint sand is fresh, because high pressure blasts it straight out.

2. Pull weeds and moss out of the joints

Roots in a paver joint act like a wedge every time the ground freezes. A weed you ignore in September becomes a lifted paver by March.

Pull them by hand or with a joint knife so you get the root. Moss usually means the area stays shaded and damp, which is a drainage conversation, not a weeding one.

3. Top off the polymeric joint sand

Joint sand is what keeps pavers locked together, and it washes out a little every season. Run a finger down a joint. If it sits more than an eighth of an inch below the paver surface, refill it.

Sweep polymeric sand into the joints, remove every grain from the paver faces, then mist it per the bag directions. Do this on a dry day with no rain in the forecast for 24 hours.

4. Check the edge restraints

Almost every spreading patio starts with a failed edge. The plastic or aluminum restraint along the perimeter is what stops the outer row from drifting.

Walk the perimeter and look for restraint that has lifted, spikes that have backed out, or an outside row that no longer sits tight against its neighbor. Fixing a few feet of edging now is a fraction of the cost of relaying a section later.

5. Find the low spots while it is still raining

Water that sits on a paver surface in November becomes ice that heaves the base in January. Fall rain is the easiest diagnostic tool you will get all year.

Go out during the next steady rain and mark any puddle wider than a dinner plate. Recurring low spots usually mean the base has settled or the patio never had enough pitch away from the house.

6. Seal only if the patio is clean and dry

A good sealer resists salt, oil, and staining, but sealing dirty or damp pavers traps the problem underneath. The result is a cloudy white haze that has to be stripped off.

Wait at least 24 hours after cleaning, longer if the weather is humid

Temperature should hold above 50 degrees for the full cure window

Frequency is roughly every three to five years, not annually

New pavers should weather a full season before their first coat.

7. Put the rock salt away

Sodium chloride is the fastest way to ruin a paver patio in Michigan. It pits the surface, accelerates spalling, and kills the plantings along the edges.

Use calcium magnesium acetate or plain sand for traction instead. A plastic shovel and a little patience beat any de-icer for protecting the surface.

When the patio needs more than maintenance

Sunken sections, a wavy surface, or joints that will not stay full are base problems. Sand and sealer will not fix them, and another winter usually makes the repair larger.

We handle paver repair, releveling, and new installation as part of our hardscaping services for homeowners in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Royal Oak, and Troy.

Fall aeration and overseeding in Southfield, MI is the highest-return lawn service on the calendar. Cool nights, warm soil, and steady September rain give new grass a head start that spring seeding never matches.

Homeowners in Southfield, Birmingham, Royal Oak, and Bloomfield Hills ask us the same questions every year. Here are direct answers.

What does core aeration actually do to my lawn?

A core aerator pulls thousands of small soil plugs out of the ground and leaves them on the surface. Those open channels let water, oxygen, and fertilizer reach the root zone instead of running off compacted clay.

Most of Southeast Michigan sits on heavy clay soil. Add a decade of mowers, kids, and dogs, and the top few inches pack down hard enough to choke roots.

When is the best time to aerate and overseed in Oakland County?

Late August through early October is the window. Soil is still warm enough for fast germination, and the weed pressure that ruins spring seeding is gone.

Aim to finish at least four weeks before the first hard frost so new seedlings can root in. In Metro Detroit that usually means wrapping up by mid-October.

Do I have to do it every single year?

Not always. It depends on how hard the lawn works and what it is sitting on.

Every year: heavy clay, heavy foot traffic, dogs, or visible thinning

Every other year: established lawns with decent soil and light use

As needed: newer sod on amended topsoil that still looks dense

What grass seed works best in Southeast Michigan?

A blend beats a single variety. Most Oakland County lawns do best with a mix built around Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescue.

Bluegrass spreads and fills gaps. Ryegrass germinates fast and holds the soil while the bluegrass establishes. Fine fescue handles the shade under mature trees, which most established Birmingham and Franklin properties have plenty of.

Should I leave the soil plugs on the lawn?

Yes. Leave them. They break down in two to three weeks and return soil microbes and organic matter to the surface.

Raking them off removes the benefit and wastes an afternoon. A mower pass after the first rain will scatter whatever is left.

How should I water after overseeding?

Frequency matters more than volume. New seed needs the top half inch of soil to stay damp until it germinates.

Days 1 to 14: light watering once or twice daily, ten to fifteen minutes

Days 15 to 30: back off to every other day, longer sessions

After 30 days: return to normal deep, infrequent watering

Skip a few days during germination and you lose the seed. This is the step homeowners most often get wrong.

When can I mow again?

Wait until the new grass reaches roughly three inches, usually two to three weeks. Mow high, keep the blade sharp, and take off no more than a third of the blade height.

Hold off on any weed control product for at least four mowings. Most pre-emergents will kill new seedlings outright.

How soon will the lawn actually look better?

Expect visible germination in seven to fourteen days and noticeable thickening by late fall. The real payoff shows up the following April.

Lawns aerated and overseeded in fall green up earlier, resist summer drought better, and crowd out crabgrass without extra chemicals.

Is it worth hiring a landscape company for this?

A rented aerator costs about as much as a professional visit once you add fuel, seed, and a lost Saturday. The difference is in the details: plug depth, pass pattern, seed rate, and whether the crew catches the drainage problem creating the bare spot in the first place.

Aeration and overseeding are part of our landscape maintenance services across Oakland County. If thin turf is a symptom of something larger, we look at landscape design and grading before recommending more seed.

Call (248) 837-0683 or contact us to get on the fall aeration schedule before the window closes.

A pool can become the centerpiece of a beautiful backyard, but the space around it is what truly shapes the overall experience. In Metro Detroit, thoughtful pool landscaping can turn an ordinary yard into a more polished, comfortable, and functional outdoor retreat. The right combination of hardscaping, plantings, lighting, and layout can make the entire space feel complete.

Why Pool Landscaping Matters

A pool without a cohesive surrounding design can feel disconnected from the rest of the property. Landscaping helps define the space, soften hard edges, improve privacy, and create a more inviting setting for relaxing or entertaining. For homeowners in Metro Detroit, it also plays an important role in drainage, traffic flow, and material performance through changing seasons.

Designing around a pool should never be treated as an afterthought. It should be planned as part of the full backyard experience.

Start With the Layout

The first step in pool landscaping is understanding how the space will be used. Some homeowners want an open area for hosting and entertaining. Others want a more private and resort-like setting. The layout should support movement between the house, pool, patio, and any outdoor living zones.

Important planning considerations include:

how people will walk around the pool

where lounge and dining areas will go

how much open space is needed

where privacy is most important

how sun and shade affect comfort

A strong layout helps the pool feel integrated into the backyard instead of simply placed in it.

Best Pool Landscaping Features

Privacy Plantings

Strategic trees, hedges, and layered shrubs can create a more secluded environment without making the yard feel boxed in. This is especially helpful in neighborhoods where homes are closer together.

Premium Hardscaping

Pool decks, paver patios, and walkways should complement the architecture of the home. Durable materials with a refined appearance help elevate the overall look and improve usability.

Accent Lighting

Landscape lighting adds ambiance and safety after dark. It can highlight plantings, define walkways, and enhance the luxury feel of the entire space.

Defined Outdoor Living Areas

Adding separate zones for dining, lounging, or gathering around a fire feature can make the pool area more versatile and appealing.

Decorative Planting Beds

Thoughtful planting design softens the hardscape and brings texture, color, and structure to the pool environment.

Choose the Right Plants

Poolside planting should look attractive without creating unnecessary mess or maintenance. In general, it is wise to avoid plants that drop excessive leaves, flowers, or debris into the water. Clean, structured plantings often work best around pools because they maintain a tidy appearance and support a more upscale design.

A layered approach can help create visual depth. Low plantings near hardscape areas, medium shrubs for body, and select ornamental trees for height can all work together to frame the pool beautifully.

Do Not Overlook Drainage and Site Conditions

In Metro Detroit, drainage is a major part of successful outdoor design. Water should move away from the pool area, patio surfaces, and home foundation. Poor drainage can create maintenance issues and shorten the life of landscape materials.

Site planning should also account for grading, soil conditions, and seasonal performance. This is one reason professional design matters so much for pool landscaping projects.

Create a Backyard That Feels Complete

The best pool landscapes feel intentional, balanced, and easy to enjoy. They offer beauty, function, and comfort while improving the overall value of the property. If you are considering a broader outdoor upgrade, pool design can work especially well with ideas featured in our related articles on How to Turn Your Backyard into a Luxury Resort-Style Oasis and The Best Time of Year for Outdoor Living Spaces.

With the right design approach, a Metro Detroit pool can become part of a backyard that feels like a true destination.

Retaining wall options do more than just hold back soil; they strategically shape outdoor spaces and improve property value. For homeowners in Metro Detroit dealing with sloped yards or uneven terrain, these structures transform difficult areas into functional, attractive landscapes.

By exploring different retaining wall options, you can effectively manage drainage, create usable yard space, and add significant visual structure to your home.

Why Retaining Wall Options Matter for Your Property

Properties with significant elevation changes often suffer from soil erosion and poor drainage. Consequently, choosing the right retaining wall options is vital for stabilizing these areas. Beyond the structural benefits, walls create unique opportunities for tiered gardens, built-in seating, and more organized outdoor layouts.

Popular Retaining Wall Materials

When selecting the best fit for your home, consider these common retaining wall options:

Natural Stone: These walls offer a timeless, upscale appearance. They blend seamlessly with Michigan landscapes while adding organic texture.

Concrete Blocks: Concrete is durable, versatile, and available in various colors. These are excellent retaining wall options for both modern and traditional home styles.

Decorative Wall Systems: These systems combine structural integrity with design flexibility. Many homeowners utilize these to create integrated seating walls for fire pits.

Improve Drainage and Stability

Specifically, retaining wall options help redirect water flow to prevent basement leaks and yard swampiness. Proper installation is critical because it prevents shifting and water buildup behind the wall. Furthermore, professional grading ensures your new wall performs perfectly for decades.

Create Functional Outdoor Living Space

One of the most significant benefits of various retaining wall options is the ability to reclaim “lost” space. Walls allow you to flatten sloped sections of your yard, making room for:

Expansive paver patios.

Lush perennial gardens.

Level play areas for children or pets.

Ultimately, this makes your property feel much larger and more functional.

Combine Retaining Walls with Landscaping

To achieve a polished look, you should combine your retaining wall options with softscaping. Adding flowers, shrubs, and fresh mulch softens the appearance of the stonework. Additionally, installing landscape lighting along the wall adds dramatic nighttime curb appeal and improves safety.

Professional Installation in Metro Detroit

Every landscape is different, which is why retaining walls require expert planning and engineering. At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help Metro Detroit homeowners design retaining wall options that improve both function and beauty.

Upgrade Your Patio with Built-In Seating

Built-in seating has become one of the most popular outdoor living upgrades for modern patios. It creates a cleaner layout, improves functionality, and helps maximize space while giving patios a more custom appearance.

For Metro Detroit homeowners investing in outdoor living spaces, built-in seating can make a major difference in both comfort and design.

Why Built-In Seating Is Popular

Unlike traditional patio furniture, built-in seating feels permanent and integrated into the overall landscape design. It creates a more upscale appearance while helping define gathering areas around patios and fire features.

Built-in seating also reduces clutter and helps outdoor spaces feel more organized.

Maximize Patio Space

One of the biggest advantages of built-in seating is efficiency. It helps maximize usable seating without overcrowding the patio with large furniture pieces.

This is especially useful for smaller patios or outdoor living areas where space matters.

Perfect for Fire Features

Built-in seating pairs naturally with outdoor fire pits and fireplaces. Seating walls help create comfortable gathering areas while making outdoor spaces more inviting for entertaining.

Fire feature seating areas are especially popular for homeowners looking to extend outdoor living into cooler evenings.

Match Your Hardscape Design

Built-in seating can be customized to match patio materials, retaining walls, walkways, and overall landscape design.

Stone, concrete block, and decorative wall systems can all be used to create seating areas that feel cohesive and professionally designed.

Add Lighting for Extra Ambiance

Integrated lighting around seating walls can dramatically improve nighttime appearance and usability. Soft accent lighting creates a warm atmosphere while improving visibility after dark.

Landscape lighting also helps highlight architectural and hardscape details throughout the backyard.

Create a More Functional Backyard

Built-in seating helps turn patios into true outdoor living spaces. Combined with landscaping, lighting, and thoughtful design, it creates an environment designed for comfort and everyday enjoyment.

At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help homeowners across Metro Detroit create outdoor spaces that feel polished, functional, and built around the way they want to use their yard.

Explore our patio and outdoor living services to start planning your backyard upgrade.

When planning a new landscaping project, homeowners often encounter the terms hardscape vs softscape. While both are essential components of a professional outdoor design, they serve very different purposes. Understanding how these two elements work together is the key to creating a balanced, functional, and beautiful landscape.

What Is Hardscape?

Hardscape refers to the non-living, structural elements of your yard. These features are typically permanent and built into the property to provide structure and layout.

Common examples of hardscape include:

Patios and Walkways: Areas for dining and foot traffic.

Retaining Walls: Used for erosion control and defining tiers.

Fire Pits and Outdoor Kitchens: Functional social hubs.

Stone Features: Decorative boulders or gravel paths.

Ultimately, hardscape improves the usability of your property and provides the “bones” of your landscape design.

What Is Softscape?

In contrast, softscape refers to the living, organic elements of your landscape. These features are what add color, texture, and life to your outdoor space. Because softscape involves living things, it is often more fluid and changes with the seasons.

Essential softscape elements include:

Trees and Shrubs: Providing privacy and shade.

Flowers and Ornamental Grasses: Adding pops of color and movement.

Turf Grass: Creating open green spaces for recreation.

Mulch and Soil: Protecting plants and maintaining moisture.

Why the Balance of Hardscape vs Softscape Matters

A successful outdoor space requires a strategic blend of both elements. If you focus too heavily on hardscape, your yard may feel cold, industrial, or uninviting. Conversely, an area with only softscape can feel unorganized or become difficult to maintain over time.

By balancing hardscape vs softscape, you create a landscape that is both functional for entertaining and visually stunning. For instance, a stone patio (hardscape) feels much more integrated when surrounded by lush garden beds and flowering shrubs (softscape).

Professional Design in Metro Detroit

The best outdoor spaces are carefully planned so that your stone structures and living plants complement each other naturally. At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help Metro Detroit homeowners achieve this perfect harmony.

Summer storm preparation is essential for homeowners across Metro Detroit. These storms often arrive with little warning, bringing heavy rain and high winds that can threaten your property. By taking proactive steps now, you can protect your landscaping, improve your home’s drainage, and minimize the need for expensive cleanups later.

A few strategic landscaping improvements can make a significant difference when severe weather strikes.

1. Inspect and Improve Drainage Areas

Poor drainage is a primary cause of property damage during heavy rainfall. If water pools near your foundation, patios, or garden beds, it can lead to erosion and basement leaks. As part of your summer storm preparation, check your yard for low spots. Implementing professional drainage solutions helps direct water safely away from your home’s structure.

2. Trim Trees and Overgrown Shrubs

High winds can easily turn overgrown branches into hazards. Regular tree and shrub trimming is a vital part of summer storm preparation because it reduces the risk of falling limbs damaging your roof or power lines. Furthermore, keeping your landscape thinned out allows wind to pass through more easily, preventing plants from being uprooted.

3. Secure Outdoor Furniture and Decor

Before a storm hits, ensure that patio furniture, umbrellas, and planters are properly secured or moved indoors. Lightweight outdoor decor can become dangerous projectiles in a Michigan summer storm. Checking your outdoor living spaces for loose materials is a simple but effective way to prevent avoidable damage.

4. Refresh Mulch for Soil Stability

Did you know that mulch does more than just look good? Fresh mulch helps stabilize soil and prevents it from washing away during downpours. During your summer storm preparation, ensure your landscape beds have a consistent layer of mulch to protect plant roots and maintain proper water flow across your property.

5. Maintain a Healthy Lawn

A well-maintained lawn acts like a sponge. Routine mowing and aeration prevent soil compaction, allowing your grass to absorb heavy rain more effectively. When you prioritize consistent lawn maintenance, your yard will recover much faster once the storm passes.

Get Professional Help with Your Summer Storm Preparation

Staying ahead of Michigan weather can be a full-time job. At Andy’s Landscape Services, we specialize in helping Metro Detroit homeowners with professional property maintenance. From professional trimming to advanced drainage improvements, we ensure your home is ready for whatever the season brings.

Contact us today to schedule your landscape maintenance and start your summer storm preparation before the next clouds roll in.

Outdoor Lighting Tips for Brilliant Hardscapes

Outdoor lighting can completely change the way a hardscape looks and feels after sunset. The right lighting setup highlights architectural details, improves safety, and creates a more inviting outdoor environment for relaxing or entertaining.

Whether you have a patio, retaining wall, walkway, or outdoor living area, professional lighting can help bring your hardscape to life at night.

Highlight Key Features

One of the most important parts of outdoor lighting is focusing attention on the most visually appealing elements of the space. Patios, seating walls, pathways, outdoor kitchens, and decorative stonework all benefit from strategic lighting placement.

Accent lighting around retaining walls or columns can create dramatic depth and help define the overall landscape design.

Improve Safety and Visibility

Lighting is not just about aesthetics. It also improves safety by making walkways, stairs, and transitions easier to navigate at night.

Path lights are especially important around patios, garden paths, and outdoor gathering areas. Proper lighting helps reduce dark spots while improving the functionality of the space after sunset.

Use Layered Lighting

The best outdoor lighting designs combine multiple lighting styles together. Layered lighting helps create balance and prevents harsh or uneven brightness.

A successful design may include:

Pathway lighting

Accent lighting

Uplighting for trees

Patio lighting

Wall lighting

Seating area lighting

This combination creates a more polished and professionally designed appearance.

Match Lighting to Your Home Style

Lighting should complement the style of your home and hardscape materials. Warm lighting tones often work best for residential landscapes because they create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.

Modern homes may benefit from cleaner and more minimal fixture designs, while traditional homes often pair well with decorative fixtures and softer lighting layouts.

Focus on Outdoor Living Areas

Outdoor lighting helps homeowners use patios and outdoor spaces longer throughout the evening. Fire features, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, and seating areas all become more functional with proper lighting design.

If you are investing in an outdoor living upgrade, lighting should always be part of the plan.

Professional Installation Makes a Difference

Poor lighting placement can create glare, uneven brightness, or wasted coverage. Professional installation ensures lighting is positioned correctly while protecting wiring and maintaining a clean appearance.

At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help homeowners create outdoor lighting layouts that improve beauty, safety, and nighttime curb appeal.

Outdoor Living Ideas for Metro Detroit Backyards

Outdoor living spaces have become one of the most popular landscaping trends across Metro Detroit. Homeowners are investing more into backyards designed for relaxing, entertaining, and spending time outdoors comfortably.

The right outdoor upgrades can improve both property value and everyday enjoyment.

Add a Patio or Gathering Space

A patio creates a foundation for outdoor living. Whether designed for entertaining guests or relaxing with family, patios help create usable space that connects landscaping with the home.

Modern patios often include seating areas, dining spaces, and integrated landscape features.

Incorporate Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting extends the usability of outdoor spaces well beyond sunset. It also improves safety while highlighting architectural and landscaping features.

Path lighting, accent lighting, and lighting around patios or outdoor kitchens can dramatically improve nighttime ambiance.

Use Plantings to Create Privacy

Strategic landscaping can help make outdoor spaces feel more private and comfortable. Trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and layered plantings can naturally define outdoor areas while improving beauty.

Privacy landscaping is especially popular in suburban Metro Detroit neighborhoods.

Include Fire Features

Fire pits and fireplaces help extend outdoor living into cooler evenings and create a natural gathering space for family and guests.

These features also help create a more upscale and inviting backyard atmosphere.

Choose Low-Maintenance Features

Many homeowners want beautiful outdoor spaces without excessive upkeep. Choosing durable materials, low-maintenance plantings, and efficient layouts can help reduce long-term maintenance.

Professional landscape planning helps balance aesthetics with practicality.

Create a Space Built Around Your Lifestyle

Every property is different. Some homeowners prioritize entertaining while others want peaceful backyard retreats.

At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help Metro Detroit homeowners design outdoor spaces tailored to how they want to use their yard.

Explore our outdoor living and landscape design services to start planning your backyard transformation.

How to Choose Flowers That Thrive in Michigan Weather

Choosing flowers for Michigan landscaping requires more than selecting colors that look good at the garden center. Weather patterns, sunlight exposure, soil conditions, and seasonal temperature swings all impact how flowers perform throughout the year.

The right selections can provide long-lasting beauty and healthier landscaping with less maintenance.

Understand Sunlight Conditions

Different flowers require different levels of sunlight. Some thrive in full sun while others perform better in shaded areas.

Before planting, it is important to evaluate how much direct sunlight different parts of the yard receive throughout the day.

Professional landscape planning helps match flowers to the correct conditions for better long-term performance.

Consider Michigan’s Climate

Michigan weather can change quickly throughout the growing season. Cold spring temperatures, summer heat, and heavy rainfall can all impact plant health.

Choosing flowers known to perform well in Michigan climates helps improve durability and reduce replacement costs.

Mix Seasonal Color

One of the best ways to create a visually appealing landscape is by combining flowers with different bloom times. This helps maintain color and interest throughout the season instead of having everything bloom at once.

Layering flowers with shrubs, ornamental grasses, and greenery can also create more balanced landscaping designs.

Focus on Maintenance Levels

Some flowers require more watering, trimming, and upkeep than others. Many homeowners prefer lower-maintenance flower options that still provide strong curb appeal.

Choosing the right flowers based on maintenance expectations helps create landscaping that fits your lifestyle.

Professional Planting Matters

Proper installation plays a major role in how flowers perform. Soil preparation, spacing, mulch installation, and watering all impact long-term health and growth.

At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help homeowners choose flowers that fit their property conditions while creating landscaping that looks polished and intentional.
