Brick paver patio maintenance in Birmingham, MI comes down to what you do in September and October, not what you do in April. Michigan runs through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter, and every one of them works on the weakest point in your hardscape.

Seven tasks make the difference. None of them take a full weekend.

1. Clear the surface before the leaves pile up

Wet leaves left on pavers for a month leave tannin stains that no pressure washer removes. They also trap moisture against the surface all winter.

Sweep the patio, then rinse it with a garden hose and a stiff brush. Skip the pressure washer unless you know the joint sand is fresh, because high pressure blasts it straight out.

2. Pull weeds and moss out of the joints

Roots in a paver joint act like a wedge every time the ground freezes. A weed you ignore in September becomes a lifted paver by March.

Pull them by hand or with a joint knife so you get the root. Moss usually means the area stays shaded and damp, which is a drainage conversation, not a weeding one.

3. Top off the polymeric joint sand

Joint sand is what keeps pavers locked together, and it washes out a little every season. Run a finger down a joint. If it sits more than an eighth of an inch below the paver surface, refill it.

Sweep polymeric sand into the joints, remove every grain from the paver faces, then mist it per the bag directions. Do this on a dry day with no rain in the forecast for 24 hours.

4. Check the edge restraints

Almost every spreading patio starts with a failed edge. The plastic or aluminum restraint along the perimeter is what stops the outer row from drifting.

Walk the perimeter and look for restraint that has lifted, spikes that have backed out, or an outside row that no longer sits tight against its neighbor. Fixing a few feet of edging now is a fraction of the cost of relaying a section later.

5. Find the low spots while it is still raining

Water that sits on a paver surface in November becomes ice that heaves the base in January. Fall rain is the easiest diagnostic tool you will get all year.

Go out during the next steady rain and mark any puddle wider than a dinner plate. Recurring low spots usually mean the base has settled or the patio never had enough pitch away from the house.

6. Seal only if the patio is clean and dry

A good sealer resists salt, oil, and staining, but sealing dirty or damp pavers traps the problem underneath. The result is a cloudy white haze that has to be stripped off.

Wait at least 24 hours after cleaning, longer if the weather is humid

Temperature should hold above 50 degrees for the full cure window

Frequency is roughly every three to five years, not annually

New pavers should weather a full season before their first coat.

7. Put the rock salt away

Sodium chloride is the fastest way to ruin a paver patio in Michigan. It pits the surface, accelerates spalling, and kills the plantings along the edges.

Use calcium magnesium acetate or plain sand for traction instead. A plastic shovel and a little patience beat any de-icer for protecting the surface.

When the patio needs more than maintenance

Sunken sections, a wavy surface, or joints that will not stay full are base problems. Sand and sealer will not fix them, and another winter usually makes the repair larger.

We handle paver repair, releveling, and new installation as part of our hardscaping services for homeowners in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Royal Oak, and Troy.
Upgrade Your Patio with Built-In Seating

Built-in seating has become one of the most popular outdoor living upgrades for modern patios. It creates a cleaner layout, improves functionality, and helps maximize space while giving patios a more custom appearance.

For Metro Detroit homeowners investing in outdoor living spaces, built-in seating can make a major difference in both comfort and design.

Why Built-In Seating Is Popular

Unlike traditional patio furniture, built-in seating feels permanent and integrated into the overall landscape design. It creates a more upscale appearance while helping define gathering areas around patios and fire features.

Built-in seating also reduces clutter and helps outdoor spaces feel more organized.

Maximize Patio Space

One of the biggest advantages of built-in seating is efficiency. It helps maximize usable seating without overcrowding the patio with large furniture pieces.

This is especially useful for smaller patios or outdoor living areas where space matters.

Perfect for Fire Features

Built-in seating pairs naturally with outdoor fire pits and fireplaces. Seating walls help create comfortable gathering areas while making outdoor spaces more inviting for entertaining.

Fire feature seating areas are especially popular for homeowners looking to extend outdoor living into cooler evenings.

Match Your Hardscape Design

Built-in seating can be customized to match patio materials, retaining walls, walkways, and overall landscape design.

Stone, concrete block, and decorative wall systems can all be used to create seating areas that feel cohesive and professionally designed.

Add Lighting for Extra Ambiance

Integrated lighting around seating walls can dramatically improve nighttime appearance and usability. Soft accent lighting creates a warm atmosphere while improving visibility after dark.

Landscape lighting also helps highlight architectural and hardscape details throughout the backyard.

Create a More Functional Backyard

Built-in seating helps turn patios into true outdoor living spaces. Combined with landscaping, lighting, and thoughtful design, it creates an environment designed for comfort and everyday enjoyment.

At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help homeowners across Metro Detroit create outdoor spaces that feel polished, functional, and built around the way they want to use their yard.

Explore our patio and outdoor living services to start planning your backyard upgrade.

When planning a new landscaping project, homeowners often encounter the terms hardscape vs softscape. While both are essential components of a professional outdoor design, they serve very different purposes. Understanding how these two elements work together is the key to creating a balanced, functional, and beautiful landscape.

What Is Hardscape?

Hardscape refers to the non-living, structural elements of your yard. These features are typically permanent and built into the property to provide structure and layout.

Common examples of hardscape include:

Patios and Walkways: Areas for dining and foot traffic.

Retaining Walls: Used for erosion control and defining tiers.

Fire Pits and Outdoor Kitchens: Functional social hubs.

Stone Features: Decorative boulders or gravel paths.

Ultimately, hardscape improves the usability of your property and provides the “bones” of your landscape design.

What Is Softscape?

In contrast, softscape refers to the living, organic elements of your landscape. These features are what add color, texture, and life to your outdoor space. Because softscape involves living things, it is often more fluid and changes with the seasons.

Essential softscape elements include:

Trees and Shrubs: Providing privacy and shade.

Flowers and Ornamental Grasses: Adding pops of color and movement.

Turf Grass: Creating open green spaces for recreation.

Mulch and Soil: Protecting plants and maintaining moisture.

Why the Balance of Hardscape vs Softscape Matters

A successful outdoor space requires a strategic blend of both elements. If you focus too heavily on hardscape, your yard may feel cold, industrial, or uninviting. Conversely, an area with only softscape can feel unorganized or become difficult to maintain over time.

By balancing hardscape vs softscape, you create a landscape that is both functional for entertaining and visually stunning. For instance, a stone patio (hardscape) feels much more integrated when surrounded by lush garden beds and flowering shrubs (softscape).

Professional Design in Metro Detroit

The best outdoor spaces are carefully planned so that your stone structures and living plants complement each other naturally. At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help Metro Detroit homeowners achieve this perfect harmony.

Outdoor Living Ideas for Metro Detroit Backyards

Outdoor living spaces have become one of the most popular landscaping trends across Metro Detroit. Homeowners are investing more into backyards designed for relaxing, entertaining, and spending time outdoors comfortably.

The right outdoor upgrades can improve both property value and everyday enjoyment.

Add a Patio or Gathering Space

A patio creates a foundation for outdoor living. Whether designed for entertaining guests or relaxing with family, patios help create usable space that connects landscaping with the home.

Modern patios often include seating areas, dining spaces, and integrated landscape features.

Incorporate Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting extends the usability of outdoor spaces well beyond sunset. It also improves safety while highlighting architectural and landscaping features.

Path lighting, accent lighting, and lighting around patios or outdoor kitchens can dramatically improve nighttime ambiance.

Use Plantings to Create Privacy

Strategic landscaping can help make outdoor spaces feel more private and comfortable. Trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and layered plantings can naturally define outdoor areas while improving beauty.

Privacy landscaping is especially popular in suburban Metro Detroit neighborhoods.

Include Fire Features

Fire pits and fireplaces help extend outdoor living into cooler evenings and create a natural gathering space for family and guests.

These features also help create a more upscale and inviting backyard atmosphere.

Choose Low-Maintenance Features

Many homeowners want beautiful outdoor spaces without excessive upkeep. Choosing durable materials, low-maintenance plantings, and efficient layouts can help reduce long-term maintenance.

Professional landscape planning helps balance aesthetics with practicality.

Create a Space Built Around Your Lifestyle

Every property is different. Some homeowners prioritize entertaining while others want peaceful backyard retreats.

At Andy’s Landscape Services, we help Metro Detroit homeowners design outdoor spaces tailored to how they want to use their yard.
